Curcuma longa: the source of Turmimax® BIO
Every Turmimax® BIO formulation begins with turmeric - the golden rhizome of Curcuma longa, cultivated across Asia for centuries and one of the most recognised botanical ingredients in nutraceuticals today.
A rhizomatous perennial herb
Curcuma longa is a rhizomatous perennial herb belonging to the Zingiberaceae (ginger) family. The plant develops from a thick underground rhizome and produces upright leafy shoots with broad green leaves. Its most recognisable feature lies beneath the soil: a branched, aromatic rhizome with a deep yellow to orange interior.
Kew identifies Curcuma longa as an accepted species within the genus Curcuma and describes it as a cultivated plant originating in southwest India.
Rhizome - an underground stem
Turmimax® BIO is made from the rhizome of Curcuma longa. Although sometimes called turmeric root, the rhizome is botanically an underground stem that stores nutrients and enables the plant to produce new shoots. It is the established commercial source of turmeric's curcuminoids: curcumin, demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin.
Tropical, cultivated, rhizome-propagated
Curcuma longa is closely associated with the Indian subcontinent and is now cultivated throughout suitable tropical and subtropical regions. The plant performs well in warm, humid conditions with fertile, friable, well-drained red loamy soils. Turmeric is propagated using healthy mother or finger rhizomes; in many Indian regions planting begins around May or June, with harvest once leaves yellow, dry and lodge.
